Adjustment disorders are mental health conditions characterized by emotional or behavioral symptoms that develop in response to a significant life stressor, such as divorce, job loss or a major life change. These reactions are stronger or more intense than would typically be expected, leading to distress, problems with daily functioning and causes difficulty with work, school and in relationships. Adjustment disorders can manifest with depressed mood, anxiety, a mix of both or with behavioral problems. These mood and behavioral issues are usually resolved once a person adapts to the stressor or is resolved. Psychotherapy can be very effective and help people move through these adjustments easier.
