Perinatal refers to the onset of pregnancy and lasts until one year postpartum. Research shows that 1 in 5 birthing parents and 1 in 10 non-birthing parents may experience depression and anxiety during the perinatal period, though the numbers are likely higher.
Perinatal mental health covers mood disorders experienced during pregnancy and up to one year postpartum including anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, OCD, psychosis, and PTSD. Additional areas that can be addressed include pregnancy and birth trauma, grief and loss, LGBTQIA+ and pregnancy, education on pregnancy and parenting, challenges with fertility/conceiving, and support for non-birthing parents.
This specific form of therapy aims at helping birthing people manage emotional and psychological challenges that may interfere with daily life, relationships, or bonding with their baby. Those trained in this type of mental health treatment use their expertise to help clients negotiate this important and transitional time of life.
